For months now I have been wanting to go to a restaurant in New York City called Camaje. This restaurant hosts dinners in the dark providing multi - course meals which are eaten while blindfolded. Without sight, other senses are heightened as stated in the reading. Smells, textures, and sounds all become more intense. There are a few things to keep in mind though when attending this restaurant. Menus are secret until the end of the meal so guests guess which food and wine is on the plate and in the glass. Any dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Tickets are purchased in advance and on arrival, you will be given an orientation outside before going into the dining room blindfolded.
I have doubted doing this because of reviews. Reviews are horrible a supposedly five star restaurant; but through my reading I was able to learn why it is because we have no sight and sight is one of the main contributors to why we like a certain food.
I think when I have free time, I will try to attend this and try to keep in mind that sight is very important for my taste buds in this experience.

I thought of the same thing during the reading! It seems like such a good concept, that is until you read this book and understand how blocking out all your other senses does not in fact enhance your perception of the flavor. I have noticed how my visual perception effects even what smells I like. Almost every bottle of perfume I have is in a blue bottle, therefore the liquid appears blue. I've wondered before if I would like the smells as much had they come in a red bottle. It sounds weird, but I associate the blue with cool and refreshing, I think.

ReplyDeleteI think it is a really neat concept and I would definitely give it a try. I think that it's kind of scary not being able to see what your eating but that's what the whole experience is about and I'd also agree that you would have to try it out for yourself because the reviews are so different for every person.
ReplyDeleteNika,
ReplyDeleteI always thought it would be cool to eat at a place like this as well. I've seen it in a few movies before and I thought it sounded so cool. After reading about it in this book it definitely does make a lot of sense. I would be a little nervous going in there but I still want to try it, it would be an awesome experience. Great post!
