Final Post

Perception is an important part of everyday life. Even though we don't think about it, our perception and senses  allow us to be productive members of society. We looked at the perception though vision, hearing, speech. We looked at sensation in the olfactory system. I learned that we are able to smell over 100,000 different smells, and that we are able to smell multiple different things separately.

One of my favorite parts of this class was learning about color and vision. The videos Island of the Color Blind was extremely interesting. 1 in 12 of their population was colorblind. Because of their religion and the small population, inbreeding is a large reason these people have colorblindness.

The video clip I added, was interesting because of of the Himba Tribe. Their perception of color is so different from ours because the way they were taught is different. For example in this clip they do a test, there are blocks of color, all green one a different shade of green. The Himba member was able to pick it out almost immediately because they could see the different shade as to Americans would have a difficult time seeing this shade difference. Then the experimenter shows blocks of colors of green with one being blue. The Himba members are not able to easily recognize the blue block because they were taught that blue and green were the same. It is amazing how learning effects perception.

  1. The Himba tribe is very interesting! I'm glad you posted the video. It's like their grouping similar color tones with the same words and separating shades. It seems that their minds have been trained to recognize various shades, but they can't really separate similar colors. I didn't know it was possible for a group of people to see colors different as we do.

  2. I had no idea that the way people are taught affects their perception of color! I had no idea that we struggle more in picking out different shades of color. Also, I agree with you that perception is such a huge part of our everyday lives but we rarely think about it.

    1. That video was very interesting. It reminds of the example in the book that talked about how bees perceive the world completely different than humans. The way we perceive colors and objects really is a state of mind.
