Hering Illusion

Over the long weekend, I came across an optical illusion that seemed very interesting to me and I wanted to learn more about it. The picture above shows two red lines that seem to be curved a little; however, in reality are completely parallel. This image is an example of Hering Illusion. It was discovered by Ewald Hering in 1861. Hering explained that our brains are tricked because they overestimate the angle made at the points of intersection between the curved blue lines and the red parallel ones.
