Post 1- How Optical Illusions Trick Our Brain

Although our brains our very complex systems, they can also be deceived and confused from time to time. This can be done with what is typically known as an optical illusion. Optical illusions take advantage of the fact that our eyes skim objects and visual pictures which causes our brains to jump to conclusions about what we see. The process of seeing something is an intricate process that takes less than one second to occur, which can lead to the quick confusion of our brains' interpretation of what is really being seen. It is all about Perception. An example of this occurrence is Johannes Stotter's paintings. Stotter paints extremely photographic and realistic looking images using backdrops and human canvases. He uses paint to soften the humanistic qualities of the canvas being painted and transforms him/her into an illusion that our brain quickly perceives as something else. Below is an image of one of Stotter's illusions.

  1. I'll admit, it took me a pretty long time to realize what this was actually a painting of! At first I thought it was just a weird-looking parrot but now I can see it is actually a painted human. Stotter is incredibly talented at body art as this image really threw me off at first.

  4. This painting is amazing! It took me a while to see the person as well. It takes incredible talent to do a painting like this one! Kelsea, if you look where the blue dot is for the eye, that is on his forehead and his arm is wrapped around the top of his head!

  6. That painting was so interesting! Even though I had to look at it for a good couple of minutes, it's amazing to see the optical illusion! I think painters that make these particular types of paintings are very talented!
