The Sense of Smell and our Memory - 4th Extra Post
I've always wondered why the sense of smell was so closely related to memory, why smelling someone's perfume or the smell of leaves on the ground can make someone feel so incredibly nostalgic and full of emotions. The reason smell is connected so strongly to our memory and emotions is due to the fact that the olfactory bulb is connected to the limbic system of the brain, which deals with emotions. This in turn can also access the amygdala and hippocampus, and thanks to conditioned responses of smelling a smell for the first time, we have a link set with that specific scent that then gets activated when we smell it again.
