A cochlear implant is a small device that is surgically implanted behind the ear and under the skin. This device is for the deaf and the hard of hearing. The device does not make their hearing 100% normal but can give them the opportunity to understand language. In the deaf community the implant is very controversial. The deaf have their own community and they embrace the way they are. If a deaf person receives the surgery there community may ignore them. From a medical point, parents are encouraged to have their  young children receive this surgery because it is life changing. For adults they believe that hearing sound may be to overwhelming after living an entire life being deaf.
