Myopia(NearSightedNess)

So far in my life, I have been lucky to not suffer from any inability to see. But I must say, loosing my ability to see is quite scary for me to think about. Many of my friends however have Myopia or nearsightedness. This is the inability to see distant objects clearly.

The American Optometric Association, state, "Nearsightedness occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, has too much curvature. As a result, the light entering the eye is not focused correctly and distant objects look blurred"(American Optometric). Nearsightedness is very common and many even suffer from it.

What causes nearsightedness? Some may argue it is heredity. While others blame, the stress on your eyes when things are to close. We found out however that Myopia is caused by the corea or lens bending too much light, and the eyeball may be to long. So you can choose which one you believe.

How do you know if you have Myopia? You would simply not be able to see distant objects. "A comprehensive optometric examination will include testing for nearsightedness. An optometrist can prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses that correct nearsightedness by bending the visual images that enter the eyes, focusing the images correctly at the back of the eye"(American Optometric). Diabetes and cataracts may also be a cause of myopia.

Here is a video describing Myopia, so check it out!

  1. I do suffer from myopia, however I never knew their was another word for it besides nearsightedness. I can tell you not wearing my glasses or contacts for long periods of time really makes me depressed because I am unable to perceive the world as I should.
