Using Echolocation

First Post

Many may ask how echolocation works and it works by projecting sound and listening to what is reflecting; the reflection it does when it hits different things in the environment. Echolocation works on humans because of the simple matter that people who are blind usually learn how to echolocate; 20-30 percent of them use it at some point. Examples of this can be finger snaps, mouth clicks, and humming. When a person uses this, they are in control of how loud they want something to be, the mouth clicks can be louder or quieter, or the finer snaps can be faster or slower.

There has been research that shows that echolocation humans can be used to show the difference between textures; metal through sound. This is very interesting because many of us who do not have a disability don’t see why we need to learn this, but this is a very interesting topic to talk about because you can be aware of echolocation and what it is. There are benefits to learning how to use echolocate. For example, it allows you to try and realize what is in front of you or your surroundings. For the people who are blind, it can help them be safe in a way, they get confidence in doing this.

Do you wonder how they are able to do this though? Would it be hard? There are so many questions, but of course, anyone is able to try this, by simply training your basic hearing skills and how well you know it, like understand how the crosswalk button sounds, etc. Understand how echolocation works, there are a lot of online resources that can help you, all you need to do is some research on google, and this will also inform you more than you think. Learning echolocation can be done by getting someone who is an expert at doing echolocation and is willing to teach you, because it can get a little hard, complicated, and you can get frustrated by thinking you don’t know how to, but patience is key.

  1. This is a great summary of how humans use echolocation. It's interesting that people can train their hearing to pick up on different sounds and things. This really shows how adaptive the human brain can be.
