The robots or characters that have very similar human-like features make me feel uncomfortable, because they aren’t real, yet they look so real. Recreating art into reality is something that artists tend to do because they are trying to have their visions come to life. Artists tend to create the appearance of their characters more real, like a couple movies that are out there like “The Polar Express”, or the movie that recently came out twice already, “M3gan”. Uncanny Valley is something that is weird to understand because it looks unreal and it makes you ask yourself, “is it real?”.
I’m not sure how you might feel about robots, but for the most part they are a little scary and weird looking and most people can agree to that. Imagine having a replica of you, as a robot version though. Geminoid HI has an android replica of himself, from the same glasses, to the same type of hair, you cannot distinguish which one is a robot. That is something you have to be very diligent with because if you want to make a replica or something look like a real life human, you have to make sure the forehead, eyes, mouth and everything else is very well formed. Uncanny Valley can be a weird to talk about because sometimes others might not get that cringe or uncomfortable feeling you get.

Hi Lesli, I found this post very engaging. I can say that I agree that robots can scary and weird. I find it crazy how Geminoid HI was able to replicate himself and make it so life-like. You did a great job!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. The uncanny valley is very unsettling to me. I remember the polar express scared me as a kid. And it’s surprising how small details can make such a big difference. It’s a weird mix of fascination and discomfort.
