Post One: Painting Using Touch

American artist John Bramblitt began painting after his vision was significantly impaired due to being sideswiped by a car. He uses his sense of touch to create masterpieces by feeling the canvas with his left hand and painting with his right hand. Bramblitt can even distinguish between different paints and their viscosity based on how they feel on his fingers. Through extensive practice, he can now paint with minimal guidance from his fingers. He also paints still lifes and portraits using touch to determine features and proportions of subjects.

In this article https://www.3playmedia.com/learn/faces-behind-screen/john-bramblitt/, Bramblitt expresses the way his art changed when he became blind. It became a tool to express himself, and as the years went on, his paintings were brighter in color and more intricate. Painting has also been a way for him to connect with others in over 120 countries.

Here is a photo of Bramblitt using his sense of touch to paint.

  1. I thought it was cool how John Bramblitt paints by feeling the canvas with one hand and using the other to paint. I liked learning that he can tell the paints apart just by how they think. It was also great to hear that his art got even more colorful and detailed after he went blind. I loved how painting helped him share his feelings and connect with people worldwide.
