Post 2: Seeing with Sound: Understanding Echolocation

2.) Beep baseball is a modified form of traditional baseball designed for individuals with visual impairments. In this version, the ball makes a beeping sound, allowing players to track its location through sound rather than sight. To ensure a level playing field, all participants wear blindfolds and rely entirely on their hearing and spatial awareness to play. One interesting point I learned from the video and chapter is that not all people who are blind experience complete darkness—some can still perceive shapes, shadows, or light when close enough.

I found it especially inspiring that beep baseball was created by a sighted man for his blind brother. This act showed a deep level of care and commitment, and it helped build a sense of community around a sport that is meaningful to many people. It demonstrates how inclusive adaptations can make a big difference in people's lives.

Another remarkable story from the lesson was about Daniel Kish, a blind individual who uses echolocation to navigate the world—even riding a mountain bike on trails. He produces clicking sounds with his tongue, which bounce off surrounding objects and return as echoes. By interpreting these echoes, Daniel is able to mentally map his environment, judge distances, and detect nearby obstacles.

What’s even more powerful is that Daniel Kish has dedicated his life to teaching echolocation to others who are blind. He begins by demonstrating the technique in simple, controlled environments like quiet rooms or open spaces with few obstacles. As learners become more comfortable, they gradually move to more complex settings. This method not only teaches them a practical skill but also promotes independence and confidence by giving them the ability to navigate their surroundings on their own.
