Proxy Touch

Our sense of touch is key to identification, knowledge, and direction. One way we use the sense is through Proxy touch. This is when an individual uses a probe or tool to touch something which then allows one to learn the different factors of the object. Using the tool to navigate an object can tell the individual what the object may be, the material, its location, and its size.

An example of this would be an individual who has a visual impairment using a vision stick to navigate the surroundings. The stick can tell an individual where there is a step, curb, opening in a room, or any other obstacle they might run into. They rely on proxy touch in their everyday lives to ensure their own safety. This concept could also be used when cooking. By using a spoon or a spatula the individual can tell the the consistency of whatever is being made. In this instance, the stirring would be the motion relied on to inform one whether it is done or if other ingredients are needed. Proxy touch plays a huge role in the lives of those who are visually impaired and those who aren't.

  1. I didn't really realize we used proxy touch as much as we do. There are so many ways we use it and it does play a huge role in everyone's lives.
