Post 1: Macular Degeneration

This semester one of my professors, Bill Quain, has a condition called macular degeneration, therefore, he is blind and only sees shadows. I assumed that was it but then in class we went over rods and cones as well as, this condition, I learned that he has a blind spot right in the center of the eye. Macular degeneration destroys the fovea which contains only cone receptors. When people look at something the first place it hits is the fovea where the cones help with color and detail vision. This is usually a condition that affects older people and it causes them to loose sight of whatever they are trying to focus their attention on. He did mention that he still goes to concerts and was able to see his daughters wedding thanks to a pair of glasses that look like virtual reality glasses/goggles.
