SAFFiR - Autonomous Firefighting Robot

The US Navy Research Laboratory has been working for a number of years on the robot shown above known as SAFFiR - the Shipboard Autonomous FireFighting Robot - which is designed to sense the area around it and guide itself to a fire and put out a fire to keep people out of danger. This robot can sense the area around itself using infrared, ultrasonic, and thermal imaging cameras to guide itself through the confined space of the inside of a ship. This is an example of the many robots that are being put to use that can sense for themselves and perceive their surroundings without needing an outside controller to give it constant instruction to function.

  1. I think it would interesting to see how the understanding of human perception influences robotic technology! Robots sensing and perceiving their surrounds seems so far off and yet so close.
