Dining in the Dark

Would you want to eat in a pitch-black restaurant, as in Chapter Five of our book? There is a new trend in the restaurant industry of restaurants that serve your meal in total darkness. Often, the food is served by a blind waitstaff. Apparently, being unable to see is supposed to heighten your other senses including taste. There is a chain of restaurants called Opaque that specializes in dining in the dark. It is very pricey, around $100 per person. According to the Yelp reviews, people either love it or hate it. A lot of people agreed with the author of our book, that the food was really not very good. It seems like the whole idea of the restaurant backfired; since your sense of taste is improved, you are more likely to notice that the food is bad! I don't think I would want to dine at a place like Opaque unless the food improved, especially with how expensive it is. It would definitely be an interesting experience, though.

  1. It's such a cool concept! It's a shame to see so many bad reviews, but (even if it did turn out to be awful) it would be a pretty interesting experience.

  2. This is so interesting due to the extreme mixed reviews about the taste of the food either being noticeably better or worse. It's kind of intriguing because the majority of opinions about his type of restaurant are so opposite of one another. I feel that one must try it for themselves in order to form a true opinion about it, and even though it is so expensive for each person it is definitely something I will add to my bucket list!

  3. It would definitely be an interesting experience to eat in complete darkness. However, many people who I personally know prefer to "see what they are eating". Like others, I too enjoy to see what I am eating before placing food items in my mouth. I specifically would not like to eat in the dark due to the possibility of a foreign object in the food (example- hair-EWE!!) However, dining in the dark would be an experience to identify if the food we eat tastes different when we observe it prior to ingesting.

  4. I think that would be an interesting experience, even if the food tasted bad. I would try it just for the experience.

  5. I think it is a really neat concept and I would definitely give it a try. I agree that it's kind of scary not being able to see what your eating but that's what the whole experience is about and I'd also agree that you would have to try it out for yourself because the reviews are so different for every person.
