Loss of Smell May Predict Death

This article suggests that losing your sense of smell may predict your future longevity. Data from over 3,000 older U.S. adults found that those with an inability to perceive odor were more than 4 times as likely to die in five years, compared to those with a healthy sense of smell. I never knew how your sense of smell is intricately tied to your health.

  1. This seems like such a simple test that can predict with such an impact. I am looking to see if they did do studies on a younger group, because I have a family member that lost their sense of smell due to an accident. Thank you for an interesting perspective/study!

  4. This is a bit startling. I would have never though that smell would be related to how long you live. I wonder if it is the same for people who lost smell due to other reasons like accidents (like what was stated above) or chronic congestion. Now every time I get a headcold I'm going to be on high alert. Interesting article.
