Another saying for presbyopia is the "old eye". In these cases, it causes a person to see distance of a near point being increased because of the hardening of the lens and the weakening of the cilary muscles. This is something that is not a disease and cannot be prevented. It tends to happen during the mid-40's and will gradually get worse. People tend to realize they are suffering from this when they have to hold the paper really far away in order for them to read.
