Hemineglect

Hemineglect, also known as unilateral neglecthemispatial neglect or spatial neglect, is a disorder that is caused by damage to the right posterior side of the parietal cortex. This disorder causes it's victims to neglect half of everything they see and do. For exampleThey may eat from only one side of a plate, write on only on one side of a page, shave or apply make-up to only half of their faces. Patients with neglect are often unaware that anything is wrong.

Even though patients with this disorder appear to have no knowledge of half of the things they see, they still manage to get some input though they are unaware of it. In one study, patients where shown two houses that looked almost identical except for the fact that one of the houses was on fire on the side where neglect patients would not be able to percieve. As a result, for someone who has unilateral neglect, the houses look identical. When the patients were asked which house they would prefer to live in, they would all choose the house that wasn't on fire. Psychologist believe that these patients are still processing the fact that the house is on fire but it stays in the in the unconscious.
