Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants are changing the lives of many deaf individuals all over the world. Cochlear implants are devices that takes the place of a damaged cochlea, and replicates electrical signals. They do not cure deafness or hearing impairment, however they do allow the individual to hear different sounds and understand language.  There is a great deal of controversy concerning the use of cochlear implants. Many feel that these implants have a negative effect on the deaf community.  While others argue that this implant has more positive effects, and is very beneficial to those who are deaf.
A close family friend has two children who are deaf, who grew up only knowing how to communicate through sign language and reading lips.   After a great deal of thought, their parents decided to give both of them cochlear implants.  The family is very happy with their decision and  they experienced great joy when their children were able to hear their voices for the first time.  Their children were also able to develop speech, and began to learn how to verbally say clear statements.  One of their greatest gifts since the implant, was when their daughter was able to verbally say, "I Love you".  The cochlear implants have transformed the lives of these individuals, and they never regretted their decision.
