Perceiving Sound

When I was younger I use to be able to hear a high pitch noises when I walked into a department store such as Macy’s. I never knew what is was or why I was hearing it. I asked my mom if she heard the noise and she told me she could not hear it, and that I was hearing things. When I was younger I had the ability to hear high pitch or high frequency noises. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWICnMbTRAU&feature=related

Dogs are able to hear noises at such a high frequency that not even human can hear. Trainers use dog whistles to get a dog’s attention. This video contains the sounds of different pitches. I can’t hear past 15000Hz but my boyfriend can’t hear past 7000Hz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFmiLHaKXhI

I also noticed that my boyfriend speaks very loudly but can never hear me when I speak using my indoor voice. I think that I speak at the necessary decibel level to be heard clearly but I think he does not perceive the loudness of my voice correctly. This isn't a real picture of us, but this is what we look like most of the time and it tends to start a lot of fights in our relationship.

  1. I have the same problem with my boyfriend. He blames his "yelling" on being Italian, even though I am Italian too. Both my parents cannot hear the high pitched ringtone that came out a few years ago. I think it is so unusual when my parents cannot hear the high pitched sounds and I can.

I made my boyfriend (who just turned 21 a couple of weeks ago) watched the video and he could not hear the sound. Meanwhile I am still 20 and I could hear the sound perfectly.

  2. Is that a legit video? I couldn't hear a thing except background noise.. I am 22 though. This video was pretty cool and I could hear all the frequencies played in this one...

I should note that I am a musician and I pretty much know I my hearings bad! And high frequencies go first when people start to lose their hearing.
