Mini Post #2:Word Perception

Shonta' Temple

Have you ever wondered the reason why when you fill out applications why they sometimes have the box with maybe some letters and some numbers in them? Next you are directed to write what you see. I asked what was that for and I was told only a human being would be able to recognize what was in the box. I know it sounds crazy but that is what I was told. I guess monsters and aliens can't apply!

What 2 words do you see? Yes, the first obvious one is GOOD, but what about the word EVIL? Do you see it? Yeah me too!

  1. This is kind of a comical post. I had no idea why online it was common to have to fill in a box like this. I at first saw Good in the picture, and then after reading your post.. I then saw the Evil. That's kind of ironic that there's evil in good!!

  2. That was an amusing way of putting it, that only a human could recognize this image. However, I'm going to assume what was meant by the comment was that other animals and life-forms are not as perceptive as humans nor are as advanced. While this was still a silly comment, because I doubt any orangutans or goldfish will be completing applications in the near future - I realize that this was to distinguish humans' senses/perception from that of other organisms. Have you ever seen the image (often seen as tattoos) that reads LIFE/DEATH, depending on the angle from which you observe it? It's interesting, and actually aesthetically pleasing as well.

  3. LOVE THIS. I love it because you are right in saying that only human begins can PERCEIVE this image. Because of the two different contexts of this image, it would be hard for computers to perceive anythings beyond their means. Humans have a way of thinking critically and the brain power to perceive the most distinct objects.

P.S.- i HATE THOSE WORD THINGS BECAUSE SOMETIMES I CAN NEVER READ THEM!

  4. I, too, have often wondered why you have to do that pain in the behind copying of the words and images for security or what have you, after this class understanding the differences of human perception versus computer perception made it all come clear!

  5. I can't never see the right words like now I still can't see EVIL... even after reading the post. I usually have to have someone else help me read the security words or play the sound.

  6. I often wondered why online sites make you complete a box like that. I would have to think that besides the fact that animals and other life-forms are not as perceptive or advanced as humans, this may also be a quick psychological evaluation like the Rorschach ink blot test. If someone sees the word evil BEFORE the word good...STAY AWAY!

  7. I looked at the word for 15 minutes before I saw evil in white. I had to squint my eyes. I think the security word is suppose to stop viruses from hackers
